Opened in 2008, Tsum valley trek is rough and a bit trek to the hidden valley of Tsum which means Vivid and inhabited by descendent Tibetan people knows as Tsumbas. It is situated in the east of Manaslu region connected with border of Tibet.

Since it is untouched valley for several years, there are many things to explore around. Their main religion is Buddhism which is packed with Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, nunneries, chortens and prayer walls and significant religious monuments, the longest mani walls at Dzong and Phurpe. Similarly, there is largest monasteries in the valley, Mu Gompa.

This untouched hidden valley is still underdeveloped but the accommodation is available in lodges and traditional ‘home stays’ where you can enjoy the friendly Tsumba and local daal, bhat and tarkari. They have their own unique language which is very distinct from our national language. And the have their own culture and tradition that are untouched by modernity. From there, you can view the beautiful Ganesh Himal Range, Sringi Himal, Bauddha Himal and Himalchuli.

It is easier and reasonable than Manaslu circuit trekking and if you wish you can combine this trip with it as well.

Itinerary

  1. 1 Arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our airport representative will warmly welcome you. You will then be transferred to your hotel in a private vehicle. After settling in and taking a short rest, you are welcome to visit us in person to get detailed insights into the Tsum Valley Trek Itinerary.

  2. 2 Drive from Kathmandu to Arughat and then Macha Khola

Your Tsum Valley Trek adventure begins early in the morning with a journey from Kathmandu to Arughat (608 m) by public bus, followed by a shared jeep ride to Machha Khola. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of lush terraces, rolling hills, and the majestic peaks of Langtang Himal, Annapurna, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal. As you pass through picturesque villages inhabited by the Gurung and Magar communities, you’ll also witness cascading waterfalls and scenic farmland before reaching Machha Khola (860 m).

To reach the Sal Forest, you'll cross a stunning suspension bridge. Emerging from the dense jungle, you'll traverse the Budhi Gandaki River before tackling a steep ascent. The trail offers captivating sights of vibrant rice fields before leading you to the charming village of Labubesi. Continuing onward, you will finally arrive in Machha Khola, where you can unwind and prepare for the next leg of your trek.

  3. 3 Trek from Macha Khola to Jagat

The trek from Machha Khola to Jagat (1340 m) is quite challenging, with many uphill and downhill sections. You will first follow the Tharo Khola to reach Khorlabesi, a small but beautiful Gurung village. A short, steep climb from there will take you to Tatopani, a natural hot spring where you can relax and enjoy the warm water.

Continuing the journey, you will cross a suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River and climb a set of stairs to reach Doban. After passing through Yaruphant, you will come to the Yaru River. In Yaru Bagar, you will cross the Cantilever Bridge, which was built in 2016 using Swiss engineering after an earthquake.

Next, you will cross the Budhi Gandaki River to its western bank, climb up the mountain, and then descend along the river to reach Jagat village. At Jagat, you will register your Tsum Valley Trek Permits at the police checkpoint, which marks the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area.

  4. 4 Trek from Jagat to Lokpa

Jagat is a large Gurung village located on a flat area. After passing through this farming village, you will climb a steep trail to Salleri, where you can enjoy beautiful views of Mount Sringi. From there, you will cross Nepal’s longest suspension bridge and descend to Sirdibas, an old Buddhist village.

Next, you will hike up to Lokpa (2240), which lies north of Philim. After about an hour of walking through dense forests, you will arrive at Ekle Bhatti. As you continue trekking through pine forests, you will reach a stunning canyon and a trail junction. To enter Tsum Valley, you will take the right-hand path and spend the night in Lokpa.

  5. 5 Lokpa to Chumling

The trail takes you through a peaceful tropical forest filled with rhododendron and pine trees. Along the way, you will navigate several uphill and downhill sections before reaching a small suspension bridge. From here, the Tsum Valley Trekking Route diverts toward Ripchet and Chumling (2386 m).

After crossing the bridge, you will follow the path past a small stone wall. At the top of Chumling village, a monastery offers a stunning view of Ganesh Himal. Chumling is home to several monasteries, including Gurwa Gumba, Mani Dhungyur, and Panago Gumba. A large Chorten stands in the middle of the field, adding to the charm of this picturesque valley.

  6. 6 Chumling to Rachen Gompa

The day starts with crossing a suspension bridge to the other side of Chumling. The trail then follows the Syar River down to Domje. From there, you will climb uphill to reach Chhokang Paro.

After passing through Rainjam and crossing another bridge, you will arrive at Gho Village, where you can find a small teashop. A two-hour climb from there will take you to Tsum, where the traditional village of Chhokang Paro is located. On a clear day, you can see the beautiful Himalchuli and Ganesh Himal mountains in the distance.

Continuing the trek, you will pass through Lamagaon before reaching Rachen Gompa (3240 m), where you will stay for the night.

  7. 7 Rachen Gompa to Nile and then up to Mu Gompa and then again back to Nile

After breakfast, you will begin a scenic hike from Rachen Gompa to the Nile (3361m). This is where you will stop for lunch and leave your heavy bags before taking a day trip to Mu Gompa.

The trail ascends through stunning landscapes, leading to Mu Gompa, the largest monastery in the region and the highest point of the Tsum Valley Trek. Surrounded by mountains, Mu Gompa sits in a breathtaking, bowl-shaped valley that feels like a world of its own.

Since Mu Gompa does not have teahouses or lodging, those who wish to stay overnight must sleep inside the monastery, which has limited space. After exploring Mu Gompa, you will return to the Nile for the night.

  8. 8 Nile to Gompa Lungdang

After a delicious breakfast at the Nile, you will head to Rachen Gompa. From there, the trail leads south towards Chumling, passing through Chhokangparo.

After about two hours of hiking, you will see a small white Gompa in Gho. A downhill path from the monastery takes you to a wooden bridge over the Siyar Khola. Crossing the bridge, you will reach Domje, where there is a school and a clinic that provides Tibetan herbal medicine.

As you continue east from Domje, you will pass mani walls and prayer flags while walking through a forest of pine, juniper, and rhododendron. To reach Lungdang Gompa (3200 m), you will climb again through a silver pine forest. Around 40 nuns live at Lungdang Gompa, which is known for its powerful evening prayer ceremony from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. The monastery also offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

  9. 9 Gompa Lungdang to Ganesh Himal Base camp

Today, you will embark on a challenging journey to the Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4200 m). The trek starts with an uphill climb, but the stunning scenery along the way will make it all worthwhile. As you follow the Tsum Valley Trek route, you'll pass through smaller valleys. Since few people visit Ganesh Himal Base Camp, the paths may not be clearly marked, but don't worry—our guides will lead the way. After about four hours, you'll reach the base camp. After taking in the breathtaking views, you'll return to Gumba Lungdang for the night.

  10. 10 Gompa lungdang to Lokpa

After a wonderful stay in Gumba Lungdang (2240), you will begin your journey back to Lokpa. The trail first takes you down to Domje, where you'll follow the higher path and cross the Laudang Khola. From Domje, you will head south towards Ripchet, passing through beautiful, dense forests and crossing suspension bridges. Afterward, the trail descends to Batti Ghumlong before making a gentle climb to reach Lokpa.

  11. 11 Lokpa to Jagat

After a restful night in Lokpa, your Tsum Valley Trek will take you downhill to Jagat, where you will reconnect with the Budhi Gandaki River. Along the way, you'll enjoy several mountain views. This will be a pleasant and easy trek for your legs as you walk through forests and descend on gentle trails. You'll cross a few suspension bridges before arriving at the villages of Sirdibas and Salleri.

  12. 12 Jagat to Macha Khola

After an early breakfast, your Tsum Valley Trek will take you downhill to Lapubensi. The journey will be mostly pleasant as you walk, but the highlight will be crossing the suspension bridges. 13. 13 Macha Khola to Kathmandu

You will now take a drive from Machha Khola to Kathmandu. First, you will board a vehicle and head to Arughat Bazaar, which will take some time. From Arughat Bazaar, you can continue your journey to Kathmandu by public bus, which will take approximately 7 to 8 hours. Once you arrive in Kathmandu, our representative will guide you to your accommodation. In the evening, we will celebrate the successful completion of your Tsum Valley Trek with a farewell dinner.
